Movies You Never Knew Were Filmed in New Haven

All About Eve. The 1950 Bette Davis classic directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz shot many key scenes in New Haven. Both Yale University and the Schubert Theater feature significantly in the film that was nominated for 14 Oscars. The film tells the story of ambitious but manipulative aspiring actress Eve Harrington who works her way into the lives of theatre stars Margo Channing and her husband Bill Sampson.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This fourth installment (2008) of the Indiana Jones series was shot in part in New Haven with Yale University standing in for the fictional Marshall College, where Indy (Harrison Ford) taught when not looking for lost treasure and saving the world. Ironically, movie canon has it that Indiana Jones was rejected by Yale when he applied.

Hillbilly Elegy. J.D. Vance’s memoir drew rave reviews when published so it’s no surprise it was turned into a film by award-winning director and former Greenwich resident Ron Howard. The 2020 movie tells the story of a young man from a poverty-stricken Appalachian family struggling to find success in life. Several scenes were shot at Yale University, which the main character attends.
